Algeria, Italy ink new security agreement

Feb 02, 2024

Algiers [Algeria], February 2: Algeria and Italy on Thursday inked a comprehensive security agreement in Algiers to reinforce coordination in combating illegal migration and cross-border crimes ranging from drug trafficking to cybercrime, Algeria's state-run Radio Algeria reported.
The agreement, an updated version of a 1999 pact, aims to revitalize collaborative efforts between the two nations, which have kept "historical and friendly ties characterized by good neighborliness and positive cooperation," said Algerian Interior Minister Brahim Merad at the signing ceremony, which was also attended by his visiting Italian counterpart Matteo Piantedosi, according to Radio Algeria.
Citing an Italian report, which shows that Algeria has relatively lower numbers of illegal immigrants arriving in Italy compared to other countries, Merad said his country has made "significant" efforts to control illegal migration while noting that a consensus has been reached on "close, distinguished bilateral cooperation in combating illegal migration."
For his part, Piantedosi labeled the agreement as "extremely important," saying the deal signals an opportunity to enhance joint security coordination and effectively address emerging challenges.
He added that Algeria is an "important partner" for Italy across strategic domains, particularly in the Mediterranean region.
The deal followed a memorandum of understanding signed during Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's state visit to Italy in May 2022.
