Bus in India's Kashmir plunges into gorge, killing 36 and wounding 19

New Delhi [India], November 16: A bus in India has fallen into a gorge dozens of metres deep, killing at least 36 people and wounding 19 others, some seriously, Indian Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said in a post on X on Wednesday. The bus first went off a motorway in the mountainous north Indian Kashmir region and then plunged into the depths, an official told the local television station NDTV. The cause of the accident was initially unknown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X and announced that he was praying for the speedy recovery of those who were injured. The families of those killed were to receive compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,406) each and those injured 50,000 rupees each, he said. Such compensation is customary in India in the event of accidents involving infrastructure.
