French president calls on mainstream parties to form coalition government

Jul 12, 2024

Paris [France], July 12: French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the country's mainstream parties to form a coalition government following last week's parliamentary elections which saw a broad leftist coalition claim surprise victory.
In what where his first public comments on the result of Sunday's vote, Macron, in a letter published in several newspapers, said sincere dialogue was needed to create a solid majority for France that was made up of different parties.
The left-wing multi-party New Popular Front (NFP) came in first in the elections but failed to win a majority, leaving no clear path to a stable government in France. The parliament is now divided between the NFP alliance, the second-place camp belonging to Macron's centrist Ensemble (Together) alliance, and Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally, which came in third.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, the left-wing alliance called on Macron to task it with forming a government. (DPA)
