Hundreds of thousands rally against govt in Serbian capital

Mar 16, 2025

Belgrade [Serbia], March 16: Large crowds gathered in the centre of Belgrade on Saturday for a mass rally against the Serbian government, which observers say was likely the largest demonstration in the country's history.
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in response to a call to protest by a student movement under the slogan "On the 15th for the 15," the news channel N1 reported.
The demonstration marks an accident in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad on November 1, in which a railway station canopy collapsed, killing 15 people.
The protesters blame corruption in the government of the increasingly authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic for the disaster in Novi Sad, pointing out that the station had just been rebuilt. Critics accuse Vucic of basing his power on corrupt networks, limited media freedom and manipulated elections.(DPA)
