Iran warns US: 'We will not leave any threat unanswered'

Feb 01, 2024

Cairo [Egypt], February 1: Following the deadly attack by a pro-Iranian militia on US soldiers in Jordan, Iran has warned the United States of the consequences of a possible retaliatory strike on the Islamic Republic, while the militia said it is suspending its attacks on US forces.
"We will not leave any threat unanswered," the semi-official news agencies Fars and Tasnim quoted the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, as saying on Wednesday.
Iran does not want war, but does not fear it, he added.
On Sunday, three US soldiers were killed and more than 30 injured in a drone attack by a pro-Iranian militia in Jordan on the Syrian border. US President Joe Biden blamed radical militant groups supported by Iran for the attack and threatened to retaliate. Iran denied any involvement. The security situation in the entire region is tense due to the war in Gaza. The United States has repeatedly emphasized that it fears the conflict in the Middle East could escalate into a regional war.
A key Iraqi Iranian-allied militia said earlier on Wednesday that it is suspending its attacks on US forces to spare the Baghdad government "embarrassment."
Since October, Iraqi pro-Iranian militias have intensified their attacks on US military bases in Iraq and neighbouring Syria in response to the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip. They are also demanding the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq.
The Kataib Hezbollah group said in an online statement that while they were announcing the suspension of military operations against the US forces, they would continue solidarity in unspecified "other ways."
