Libya kicks off municipal council elections

Tripoli [Libya], June 10: The Libyan High National Elections Commission on Sunday announced the start of the municipal council elections in the country.
"The Commission announces today, Sunday, June 9, 2024, the start of municipal council elections, initially targeting 60 municipal councils across various parts of the country, out of a total of 106 municipal councils targeted for this year's elections," the Commission said in a statement.
The municipal electoral process will begin with the first phase of voter registration for 15 days until June 23, the Commission said.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the start of the municipal council elections in the country.
"UNSMIL welcomes the opening of the voter registration process for the upcoming municipal council elections in 60 municipalities. We encourage all eligible Libyans, including women and youth, to register to exercise their right to elect the future leadership of their municipalities," the mission said in a statement
