Myanmar navy seizes 1.45 tons of narcotic drugs

Yangon [Myanmar], January 12: Myanmar navy has seized 1.45 tons of Methamphetamine (ICE) in its territorial waters, according to the country's Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on late Thursday.
The country's authorities confiscated the drugs on Jan. 4 while they searched a wooden boat in Myanmar's territorial waters, approximately 135 miles southeast of Hainggyikyun Township of Ayeyarwady Region, the CCDAC said.
Initial investigations showed that the drugs were intended for transportation to foreign countries through Kawthoung, it said.
The confiscated drugs are worth over 36.25 billion kyats (over 17 million U.S. dollars), and five offenders were already arrested for the case, it said.
A total of seven suspects, including five offenders arrested, were charged under the Southeast Asian country's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Further investigation was underway.
