Rumors of 'lost contact' with expected Hezbollah leader

Oct 06, 2024

Jerusalem [Israel], October 6: Israel carried out a major attack on the Dahiyeh area, a southern suburb of Beirut, late on October 3. Israeli officials said the attack targeted Hashem Safieddine in an underground bunker.
Reuters quoted Lebanese security sources as saying that airstrikes in Dahiyeh since October 4 had prevented rescuers from searching the scene of the attack. Hezbollah has so far made no comment on Mr. Safieddine.
Israeli military official Nadav Shoshani said the military was assessing the airstrikes on October 3, which he said targeted Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters.
Israel has carried out a series of airstrikes targeting senior Hezbollah figures, culminating in the killing of the late leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27. Losing his rumored successor, Safieddine, would be a blow to Hezbollah. Israel has been carrying out nightly bombings of Dahiyeh, once a bustling and crowded area of Beirut and a Hezbollah stronghold.
The Israeli military expanded its attacks on Lebanon on October 5, launching airstrikes on the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. On the same day, Hezbollah in Lebanon said it had launched Fadi-1 rockets at Israel's Ramat David Air Base near Haifa, about 45 kilometers from the border. Hezbollah also said it had downed an Israeli tank in southern Lebanon with a missile.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on October 5 that it had carried out a series of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah intelligence facilities in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The IDF said it had taken measures to minimize civilian casualties in the airstrikes, including using "precision munitions," issuing evacuation orders, and providing aerial surveillance.
