Thousands protest in Mexico against president and for fair elections

Feb 20, 2024

Mexico City [Mexico], February 20: Thousands of people took to the streets in Mexico's capital and other places in the country under the slogan "for our democracy" on Sunday.
Almost three and a half months before the presidential and parliamentary elections, demonstrators filled the Mexico City's central square. Many of them were dressed in pink, the colour of the electoral authority INE.
INE's former head Lorenzo Cordova gave a speech in front of the presidential palace. There were also demonstrations in other Mexican cities calling for fair elections and protesting the dismantling of democratic institutions.
The government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has pushed through an electoral reform that drastically reduces the electoral authority. The left-wing populist also wants federal judges - including for the Supreme Court - to be elected by the people. Some critics have warned of a possible return to the times when Mexico's state institutions were not independent of the government and the "Party of Institutionalised Revolution" ruled for 71 years, from 1929 to 2000.
